Frequently asked questions

Q: Whats the latest kernel version for the ps4?

A: The lastest kernel version is 7.0.

Q: How good is Baikal support?

A: Baikal support has been greatly improved since the new developers joined the scene, but still remains experimental.

Q: Does Baikal support internal install?

A: Yes Baikal supports internal install.

Q: Does kernel version matter?

A: No not really, unless you use a really old one that is uncompatible with the new libraries.

Q: What about performance kernels?

A: If all you care about is squeezing as much performance as possible out of the PS4 (you proabbly do) try the performance kernel section. Those have patches to make the system more responsive.

  • These kernels while still called "performance kernels" do not really improve any performance so do not expect 30% fps boost just from changing 1 file.

Q: Is any other operating system supported?

A: Now as of now no other OS is supported but there are possible ones that can work like OpenBSD, FreeBSD and other such distros. AND NO WINDOWS IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE SUPPORTED

Q: Can you emulate games on it?

A: Yes you can emulate pretty much any game that is not PS4 of course, because shadPS4 is not supported. Yes you can emulate PS3 games(Not at full speed for most of the library).

Quote from one of the new lead devs: rmux: "never let a french retard code something for PlayStation"

Q: What are the limitations of the PS4 and linux

Hardware

  • While PS4 Linux support has improved significantly, the hardware still has several unavoidable limitations that affect overall performance and usability. The most notable constraints are the shared 8GB pool of GDDR5 system memory and the relatively weak CPU, both of which can become major bottlenecks depending on the workload. These limitations cannot truly be eliminated, only worked around or optimized for.

  • Also the PS4 FAT/Slim models are noticeable weaker for gaming.

Software

  • The software support is pretty good but there still issues like not full Vulkan 1.4 and some things likely missing neccesery gpu support though such software still has not been found.

  • No other software limitations besides that.
